Montinola: My players are not like Duncil

“NO FEU player has breached the age limit, even before.” This was the statement made by Anton Montinola, Far Eastern University Board representative to the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines, to inboundpass.com, regarding reports that one of his school’s players was ineligible when he suited up for the Tamaraws.
Montinola said in a phone interview last May 31, 2008 that all athletes playing for FEU, regardless of sport, are eligible to play, and that the school is very strict about the issue because of past events that have hounded the UAAP.
“I do respect inboundpass,” said Montinola. “I can assure you or you can verify it [with] the NSO [that] all our players are in their playing years. We are careful regarding that matter (eligibility). My players are not like Duncil.”
Montinola was referring to former Santo Tomas hotshot and current PBA pro Jojo Duncil, who was found guilty of possessing two birth certificates last year.
Duncil’s year of birth, as stated in the files of the UAAP, was 1983. But records from the National Statistics Office revealed that the 2006 UAAP finals MVP was born in 1982.
Montinola also reiterated that his athletes are academically-eligible. “When it comes to academic, my players are also all okay,” he said. “We are denying those false rumors.”
The league has also had its fix of academic-related ineligibility cases. The La Salle Green Archers were suspended in 2006 after Mark Benitez and Tim Gatchalian were found to have falsified Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPTC) records.
Recently, a highly-placed source disclosed that an FEU cager played in the 2005 season but should have been deemed ineligible due to a falsified birth certificate. But Montinola and the rest of the Tams coaching staff have called it “pure gossip.”
To protect the player’s image and reputation, inboundpass.com will not reveal his true identity pending the results of a possible probe into the matter.
Montinola, meanwhile, said he is pleased about the team’s performance in the ongoing summer preseason tournaments. The Tamaraws are 7-0 in the Nike Summer League and 4-1 in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
